Enugu State Government Flags Off Free Hydrocele Surgeries, Marks Milestone in Fight Against Lymphatic Filariasis
The Enugu State Ministry of Health, in partnership with The Carter Center (TCC), has announced the commencement of free hydrocele surgical operations as part of its Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP) initiative aimed at alleviating the burden of lymphatic filariasis and related conditions among residents.
This development follows the state’s remarkable achievement in halting the transmission of lymphatic filariasis (commonly known as Elephantiasis) in 2024, through mass drug administration using Mectizan and Albendazole. The effort was led by the Ministry of Health with technical support from The Carter Center, targeting people at risk across Enugu State.
Building on this milestone, the government is now shifting its focus to those already affected by the disease, particularly patients suffering from Hydrocele (locally known as Ibi or Mkpụ) and Lymphedema (Elephantiasis of the leg – “Ukwu agba shoe”). These conditions, though preventable and manageable, often result in long-term disability and stigma if untreated.
According to a statement from the Ministry, the free hydrocele surgeries will officially commence on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Parklane. The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with The Carter Center and Reaching the Last Mile Fund, a global health initiative committed to ending preventable diseases.
“All persons living with Hydrocele or Lymphedema are advised to report to the nearest health centers for confirmation and referral,” the statement reads. “They may also contact the following focal persons for more information and access to care: Abireh (0802 544 2515) and Ebere (0803 629 8047).”
The Ministry emphasized that this public health intervention aims to restore dignity, mobility, and hope to individuals suffering from the after-effects of lymphatic filariasis, and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to leaving no one behind in the journey toward a healthier Enugu State.
This initiative marks yet another significant step in the state’s broader health agenda and showcases the impact of effective government-donor partnerships in driving community-centered healthcare solutions.
