A bombshell has rocked Enugu State's political landscape as Barr. Sunday Umeha, a member of the House of Representatives elected on the Labour Party platform, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmaker cited the protracted crisis rocking the Labour Party at both national and state levels as the reason for his defection, stating that it has made it impossible for him to effectively represent his people. Umeha's decision to join the ruling party is driven by the need to connect to the centre and bring benefits to his constituents, as he believes that "there are a lot of advantages in plugging to the centre."
Umeha also commended the APC for serving the interests of Igbos better than the PDP at the federal level, highlighting notable projects such as the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway and Enugu-Port Harcourt roads. These landmark projects, he believes, demonstrate the party's commitment to development and progress in Igbo land.
This defection marks a historic moment for the APC in Enugu State, as the party has never won a single election in the state since its formation over 10 years ago. With Umeha's defection, the APC now has an elected official in Enugu State for the first time, a development that is likely to have significant implications for the state's political landscape.
