EWGA Passes Vote of Confidence on Governor Peter Mbah's Administration, Calls for Urgent Action on Security, Food Security, and Water Challenges to Sustain Progress in Enugu State
In a significant development, the Enugu West General Assembly (EWGA) has passed a vote of confidence in Governor Peter Mbah's administration, citing his leadership excellence and legacy projects in Enugu State. The EWGA, led by Hon. Prince Humphrey Onyima (EBUBE MGBOWO), has expressed its readiness to endorse Governor Mbah for a second tenure in 2027, acknowledging the giant strides he has made in office.
According to the EWGA, Governor Mbah's administration has recorded remarkable achievements in urban renewal, transportation, healthcare, education, tourism, and infrastructure development. However, despite these accomplishments, the EWGA has urged the Governor to address some pressing challenges facing the state.
Security Challenges
The EWGA has expressed concern over the rising trend of insecurity in Enugu State, particularly kidnapping incidents and neighborhood security threats. In a statement, the group urged Governor Mbah to urgently rejig Enugu's security strategy, emphasizing the need for a deep understanding of the local terrain, cultural context, and community dynamics.
"The very sense of security associated with your administration from the surgical interventions carried out from inception is fast disappearing," the EWGA stated. "Many residents have alleged a significant decline in public safety in recent times. Enugu State security management needs some deep understanding of our local terrain, cultural contents, and community dynamics."
Food Security
The EWGA has also highlighted the need for the state government to address food security challenges in Enugu State. The group suggested that the government should provide direct grants to rural farmers, enhance storage facilities, and support large-scale agribusinesses.
"Enugu State Government should provide direct grants to boost farming activities in the rural areas," the EWGA stated. "There should be deliberate efforts by the State Government to enhance food security by supporting smallholder farmers while creating opportunities for large-scale agribusinesses in the state."
The group also emphasized the need for the government to invest in food storage facilities, citing the huge post-harvest losses suffered by farmers in the state due to lack of modern storage facilities.
Water Challenge
The EWGA has also expressed disappointment over Governor Mbah's failure to fulfill his promise of providing water to Enugu residents within 180 days of taking office. The group has urged the Governor to declare a state of emergency in the water sector, citing the current crisis in the state's water supply.
"Two years into Mbah's administration, the promise remains unmet, with many residents still struggling to access clean water without even any explanation as to regards the failure," the EWGA stated.
The group noted that the price of tanker water supply has risen significantly, with 500 gallons of tanker water now being sold for N16,000, 750 gallons for N22,000, and 1000 gallons for N30,000. The EWGA attributed the price hike to the high taxes imposed on water vendors by the state government.
In light of these challenges, the EWGA has called on Governor Mbah to take immediate action to address the security, food, and water challenges facing the state. The group remains optimistic that with these issues addressed, Governor Mbah's administration will continue to thrive and make meaningful impacts in the lives of Enugu residents.
