NANS ENUGU STAY SAFE INITIATIVE AGAINST COVID-19 PARTNERS WITH ENUGU STATE POLICE COMMAND...Calls On NGOs & People of Goodwill To Support The Police With Sufficient Personal Protective Equipment.
The Volunteer Team of the Enugu State National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Stay Safe Initiative Against COVID-19 (NSSIAC), as part of its State-wide Sensitization Campaign and Distribution of Safety Materials needed for the prevention of COVID-19, has extended the initiative to the Enugu State Police Command.
In view of this, the Team on 21/4/20 began a tour of Police Checkpoints within Enugu metropolis, where it sensitized and distributed COVID-19 Personal Protective Equipment to Officers and Men of the Police at their Stop/Search duty posts.
Addressing Newsmen after the exercise, the State Chairman of NANS, Comrade Romanus Ogene noted that extending the Initiative to the Police became imperative because of their high risk of exposure to the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic in the line of duty.
According to him, "this initiative is borne out of the realisation that Policemen are another class of indispensable Nigerians who are, on a daily, exposed to the risk of contracting Covid-19."
On his part, the Deputy Coordinator, South-south/South-east of NANS, Comrade Darlington Ugwuegbe, while highlighting the importance of the Police and Policing in these trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic, had this to say:
"We know that while the State is observing a lockdown, policing must continue and our Police Officers are constantly at risk because of the necessary contacts required in the dispatch of their duties."
NANS Enugu State further used the opportunity of the address to commend the efforts of the Enugu State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi at curbing the spread of the Virus in the State. It, however, called on the Government and well-meaning citizens of the State to give the Police the necessary moral and material supports, especially by providing them with Personal Protective Equipment, they need to stay safe, strong and healthy enough to proactively carry out the onerous task of policing the community these trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, speaking through the Command's PPRO, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmad AbdurRahman, described the kind gesture of NANS to the Police as "laudable and first of its kind to the Command." He urged them not to relent in their effort at contributing their quota to the containment of the spread of the Virus, while calling on the law-abiding citizens of the State to keep complying with the restriction orders of Government as well as observe the stipulated preventive measures.
