Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic - A devastating roof collapse at the iconic Jet Set nightclub in the capital city has claimed the lives of at least 98 people, including a sitting governor and a former Major League Baseball pitcher. The tragic incident occurred during a concert attended by a mix of politicians, athletes, and other prominent figures. Estimates suggest that between 500 to 1,000 people were present at the venue when the disaster struck in the early hours of Tuesday. Provincial governor Nelsy Cruz and former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel were among the deceased. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted a three-day period of moderate to heavy rainfall across six states in the country, starting from Wednesday, April 9, to Friday, April 11, 2025. According to NiMet's heavy rainfall forecast bulletin released on Tuesday, the affected states are Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Bayelsa, Delta, and Ogun. The agency warned that the anticipated rainfall may lead to flash floods in these areas. In addition to the six states, NiMet also predicted light to moderate rainfall in Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Imo, Abia, Ekiti, and a few other states. Other parts of the country are expected to experience either very light rain or no rain over the next three days. The agency cautioned that strong winds may accompany the rains, posing a threat to weak structures, trees, and masts. Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has charged Africa on robust regional collaboration and trade facilitation, insisting that Africa’s economic renaissance lies in extensive trade, not charity. Mbah, who insisted that Africa had all that it takes to build its own table, rather than wait to be invited to the table, also tasked the continent on fully exploiting the power of intra-Africa trade and opportunities inherent in the African Continental Free Trade Area, AfCFTA.
