…Say State Needs Policies That Strengthen SMEs, Human Capital and Democracy
The Nkanu Youths Organization (NYO) has cautioned political leaders and groups in Enugu State against what it described as the premature endorsement of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing journalists in Enugu on Friday, the President of the organization, Comrade Dika David, said the ongoing wave of endorsements was “antithetical to development,” stressing that the focus at this stage should be on governance and the fulfillment of campaign promises to Ndi Enugu.
The group expressed concerns about the impact of current policies on citizens, alleging that multiple taxation was affecting the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and reducing purchasing power.
“Enugu State cannot attain the vision of a $30 billion GDP by stifling SMEs and reducing the purchasing power of the people through multiple taxation. Ndi Enugu are suffering silently, and the government must show empathy,” Comrade David stated.
He further argued that Governor Mbah had yet to fully deliver on campaign promises, particularly in the areas of transparency, accountability, and human capital development.
On the issue of succession, the NYO stressed that Nkanu land is blessed with competent leaders who could equally steer the affairs of the state when the time comes. The group cited names such as Capt. Everest Nnaji (Odengene), Chief Uche Nnaji (Nwakaibie), and Chief Samson Chukwu Nnamani as examples of capable leaders.
“We urge that the 2027 contest be left open to all qualified Nkanu men and women in order to jettison rancor and acrimony within Nkanu land rather than being predetermined by baseless endorsements. Healthy competition will only strengthen democracy and give the people confidence in the process,” the statement read.
The youths also emphasized the need for inclusive policies and greater investment in youth empowerment and capacity-building initiatives, alongside infrastructure projects.
“As the next generation of leaders, we are determined to play a decisive role in shaping the Enugu of tomorrow, a responsibility we embrace with total commitment and seriousness. Anything done for us without us is completely against us. Youths are not only the leaders of tomorrow; we are also stakeholders of today,” Comrade David declared.
The NYO further urged all eligible youths across Enugu State to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise, stressing that active participation in the electoral process is vital to shaping the future of the state.
